V4 Client over 3.7 Database

LinLin Member Posts: 40
We are investigating the possible benefits of running a v4 client over a 3.70B database as we have been told that there could be potential performance benefits of doing this without the large task of a full upgrade.

Has anyone had any experience with this or have any comments to make on this.

Thanks :D

The performance are mostly for sql. Are you using sql?
The improvement are sift table updates improvements, sql indexes, new function findfirst, findset, findlast.
    Locking record changes. xmlports.

    Thank you for that.

    Yes we are using SQL.

So these improvements will occur when just using the v4 client ?

Yes you'll see improvements, but they will be subtitles. You can do some sql tunning, on indexes and sift tables, without change the code.
I suggest somebody who has experience doing this.
Also are you weekly updating the indexes and statistics?
Are you optimizing the tables that you do a lot of writes and deletes?

Tools->database->information->tables->select sales Header, sales line etc and click optemize.

    Thanks.

We have reviewed all Indexes and Sifts and done a number of changes to improve these (or remove them).

We optimise various tables on a Daily, Weekly and Monthly basis using Keygroups and our statistics are updated daily.

Our performance is not critically bad but not as good as we would expect it (or Microsoft would expect it) given our hardware. Microsoft have recommended that we use the Nav 4.0 Client over our existing 3.70 database to see further improvements.

I guess I am a bit dubious as to the benefits vs the cost (time/issues) that this may give us.

I am also keen to know if anyone has actually done this in a live environment and what their benefits/problems were.

    Thanks

    Thanks.

Aside from having 20yrs experience in IT myself, 5 of them as a DBA with SQL - we have had the microsoft techies also look at our indexes and navision system.

However, I do only have 18 months experience with Navision so I am always open to any suggestions. :D:D

At the moment I am trying to do a CBA on upgrading our client to v4.0.

5.0 is coming out in two months so. You might as well and upgrade to that. I'm sure they've done additional improvements for performance.

You can still test v4.0 and see the performance difference.
