We are in the process of upgrading our NAV environment to RTC. We have a distributed architecture that is world wide with 5 separate databases for each of the major countries we support. A difficulty that we're having a tough time swallowing is the new 3 tier architecture hardware requirements. Apparently the recommendation from MS is that we have an application server for every 50 users. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

For 2009 yes.

But that's not physical application servers.

You can also have multiple instances of server tier on one box.
