Date filter excluding closing entries

A customer asked me how to run a report across a year end that would exclude their closing entries posted January 31st (C01/31/14). In the classic client, this was simple. Use the date filter:
09/01/13..01/31/14|02/01/14..08/31/14
I just tried the same filter in NAV 2013 R2, and the RTC won't accept it. It throws the error: The filter "09/01/13..01/31/14|02/01/14..08/31/14" on the Date Filter field has no single range of possible values.
Is there some other way to apply this sort of filter in the RTC?
